What is an AI Text Cleaner and why do you need one?

An AI Text Cleaner is a tool that normalizes text produced by AI models so that it behaves like text typed straight from a keyboard. AI chats return text with Markdown formatting and polished typography, and when you copy it you also carry along characters you cannot see or do not expect.

Those characters look harmless, but they cause real problems: searches that miss a word that is right in front of you, lines that refuse to wrap where they should, code or JSON that breaks because of curly quotes, forms that reject a value that looks correct, and stray asterisks or hash signs in your CMS.

Invisible text detector: the hidden characters it finds

The tool works as an invisible text detector: it locates Unicode characters that do not show on screen and marks them with a colored label, so you know exactly where they are. These are the most common ones:

Word joiner (WJ)	U+2060	Prevents line breaks and makes two texts that look identical fail to match.
Direction marks (LRM, RLM, RLO…)	U+200E, U+200F, U+202A to U+202E	Change the order in which text is displayed; a risk in code and file names.
Non-breaking space (NBSP)	U+00A0, U+202F	Looks like a normal space, but will not let the line wrap and does not match in searches.

The detector leaves these characters alone where they are needed: compound emojis (families, flags, skin tones) and languages that rely on them to be written correctly, such as Persian or Hindi, are kept intact.

Special spaces

Turns non-breaking, thin and other odd-width spaces into normal spaces and trims the ones left at the end of each line.

Quotes, dashes and ellipses

Replaces curly quotes with straight ones, em and en dashes with simple hyphens and the ellipsis character with three dots. Angle quotes « » are left as they are.

AI citation leftovers

Removes source markers such as oaicite and the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter added to links.

Markdown formatting

Strips heading hash signs, bold and italic asterisks, backticks and link syntax, while keeping the words.

Emojis

Deletes emojis and the gap they leave behind, which is handy for professional, technical or academic text.

Fancy and lookalike letters

Converts bold, italic or full-width Unicode letters into plain letters and replaces Cyrillic or Greek letters disguised inside Latin words.

What is an AI Text Cleaner?

It is a tool that cleans AI-generated text. It removes invisible characters, converts special spaces, curly quotes and long dashes into their plain equivalents and, if you want, strips Markdown formatting and emojis. The result is plain text that behaves the same in any program.

What is an invisible text detector?

It is the feature that finds Unicode characters you cannot see on screen, such as the zero-width space (U+200B) or the byte order mark (U+FEFF). Our tool marks them with a colored label on your original text, shows their code and removes them from the result.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All the cleaning happens in your browser. The text you paste never leaves your device and is not stored, so you can use the tool with drafts and confidential documents.

Does the tool rewrite my text or change its meaning?

No. It only replaces or removes specific characters: it does not change words, paraphrase or use artificial intelligence. You can check every change in the What was found tab before copying the result.

Will it stop an AI detector from flagging my text?

That is not what it is for and we cannot guarantee it. AI detectors mostly analyze writing style, which this tool does not change. What it does is remove the hidden characters and formatting leftovers that cause technical problems when you paste the text.

Does ChatGPT add invisible watermarks to text?

As far as is known, no. In 2025 narrow no-break spaces (U+202F) were found in the output of some models, and OpenAI explained that they were not a watermark but an unintended side effect of training. Either way, the tool detects and cleans those characters.

Why does my text contain invisible characters I never typed?

They usually arrive through copy and paste. AI chats, web pages, PDFs and word processors use non-breaking spaces, soft hyphens and other control characters to lay out text, and those characters travel with it on the clipboard.

Can I clean code, JSON or HTML?

Yes. Turning curly quotes into straight ones and removing zero-width characters is often exactly what fixes a snippet that fails for no visible reason. Keep the Markdown and spacing options off if you want to preserve asterisks, hash signs and alignment.

Are emojis and Markdown formatting removed?

Only if you ask. Both cleanups are optional and off by default. The counter on each option tells you how many emojis or Markdown marks your text contains, so you can decide whether to switch them on.

Does it work with text in other languages?

Yes. Accented letters and characters such as ñ, ç or ü are kept, and so are angle quotes « ». If your language uses em dashes for dialogue, switch off the long dashes option to keep them.
