EAN-8
Format: EAN-8 is a shortened version of the EAN-13. It is composed by 8 numeric digits: the first two or three represent the country of the manufacturer, the following four identify the product and the last is a check digit.
Supports: Only numeric digits (0-9).
Applications: it Is ideal for small products, such as stationery items, where the space in the package is limited. It is used especially in products for sale at retail.
EAN-13
Format: This code is composed of 13 digits: the first three represent the country code, the following nine are the unique identifier for the product, and the last digit is a verifier.
Supports: Only numbers (0-9).
Applications: widely used in supermarkets, retailers, and libraries. It is the standard for consumer products and packaged goods at the global level. The EAN-13 is the main format of identification in Europe and other regions outside of north America.
UPC (Universal Product Code)
Format: There are two main types of UPC codes: UPC-A (12 digits), and UPC-E (6-digit display for small products). The UPC-TO have a structure similar to EAN-13, not including the country. Contain 11 digits of data and 1 check digit.
Supports: Only numbers (0-9).
Applications: it Is used predominantly in the united States and Canada, especially in the retail trade. UPC is the standard format for the majority of consumer products in north America, from food to electronics.
CODE39
Format: Also known as ‘Code 3 of 9’, CODE39 is an alphanumeric bar code that can vary in length. Its distinguishing feature is that it supports upper case letters, numbers and some special characters (-, ., $, /, +, %).
Support: Letters A-Z, numbers (0-9), and the special characters mentioned.
Applications: Commonly used in applications of inventory, in the automotive industry and in the management of supplies. Its flexibility of content makes it an excellent option for labeling parts, equipment and spare parts.
CODE128
Format: This is an alphanumeric code compact and can contain all ASCII characters, including letters, numbers, and special characters. CODE128 is used especially in codes longer due to its ability to store more data in less space.
Supported: ASCII Characters, complete (A-Z, A-z, 0-9, symbols).
Applications: Ideal for applications shipping and logistics, thanks to its high density of data. The airlines, parcel shipping companies and warehouses often use it to track and manage inventories due to its accuracy and storage capacity.
CODABAR
Format: This bar code is simple and flexible, consisting of a combination of numbers and some special characters. Starts and ends with one of the letters A, B, C or D , and supports numbers, and symbols ($, -, ., /, +, :).
Supported by: Numbers (0-9), symbols mentioned, and it starts and ends with A, B, C or D.
Applications: Due to its ease of use, it is used in blood banks, libraries, and logistics applications. CODABAR is useful for environments in which the encoding and decoding is quick and easy data are essential.
